    Activity Level

Active trips revolve around multi-sport activities that keep your family outside and having fun! Your family will spend more time interacting with the elements and exploring than sitting on a beach or inside of a museum. These activities are not always physically demanding but they can be and do require a basic level of fitness.

    7 breakfasts, 8 lunches, 7 dinners

The Azores, a nine-island archipelago about 875 miles west of its Portuguese homeland, is packed with unique adventures, from kayaking crater lakes and whale watching on São Miguel to hiking dormant volcanoes on Faial Island and walking through Azorean Wine Country, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You’ll be talking about this Azores family vacation for a long time!

    Recommended Age: 8+

    Whale Watching Sea Safari

We’ll take a whale watching tour in one of the world’s 10 best sighting destinations. The waters that surround the Azores Islands are teeming with marine life as we’ll search for whales, dolphins, turtles, and sea birds.

Refresh and Relax in Natural Hot Springs

Natural hot springs are one of the archipelagos’ most famous features. You can relax in ones connected to your hotel, swim in ones in the ocean, and even use their heat underground to cook dinner.

    Explore Ponta Delgada

Hike around the twin volcanoes and blue and green crater lakes of Sete Cidades and meet a local farmer on a Five Senses Cultural Immersion Tour.

Walk Through UNESCO Vineyards on Pico

The vineyards of Azorean Wine Country received UNESCO designation in 2004 to preserve their beautiful and unique landscape.

    Venture Around Furnas

Hike to abandoned villages, visit the only working tea plantation in all of Europe, and journey to different centers of geothermal activity and learn about the science behind it.

    Day 1

    Fly to Azores

    Days 2-4

    Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel

Spa & Bathing Site of Ponta Da Ferraria

Take a swim in one of the most serene and relaxing places in the Azores, the natural swimming pool of Ponta Da Ferraria. Whether lying out in the sun on volcanic rocks or swimming in the natural ocean hot spring pool, your family will be happy and relaxed!

Mountain Biking & Kayaking in Sete Cidades

We’ll find adventure on “The Green Island”. We will visit Sete Cidades, a village located in a dormant volcano with twin crater lakes, where we’ll take a bike ride along the shore or kayak in the serene waters.

    Five Senses Cultural Immersion

Travel to a Five Senses Tour at a local farm and make a stop at Escalvados’ viewpoint for a spectacular view of the countryside. We’ll spend time with locals and learn about Azorean history, take a carriage ride, learn about life on a typical Azorean farm, milk cows (hopefully not a grumpy one!), plow soil, and knead dough to bake delicious traditional bread or biscuits.

    Dolphin and Whale Watching

We’ll take a whale watching tour in one of the world’s 10 best sighting destinations for a chance to spot sperm whales, bottlenose dolphins and more!

Snorkel Vila Franca do Campo Islet

Hop on a fishing boat toward Vila Franca do Campo Islet, a volcanic crater enclosing a natural lagoon, to snorkel its crystal-clear waters teeming with protected fish species!

    Days 5-6

    Faial Island (Horta)

Flight from Sao Miguel to Faial

Enjoy a change of scenery with a flight to Faial Island (Ilha do Faial), a hexagonal landmass known as “The Blue Island” for the plentiful hydrangeas that bloom there in summer.

    Hike the Capelinhos Volcano

Take a “walk on the moon” on the island’s westernmost point, Capelinhos Volcano, the site of the last volcanic eruption in the Azores!

Visit to Capelinhos Volcanic Interpretation Center

While at the Capelinhos Volcanic Interpretation Center, we’ll watch a 3-D movie and talk to the staff at the center to learn about the formation of the Azores Islands and visit the lighthouse, which offers an incredible view of the “new” part of the island, formed by a volcanic eruption in 1957.

    Canto da Doca Dinner

Get a chance to play “chef” at the popular Canto da Doca restaurant in Horta. We’ll use stones heated up to 500 degrees to cook your choice of fresh meat or fish.

Short Ferry Ride to Pico Island

Take a ferry ride out to Pico Island, home to Azorean wine country and the highest point in Portugal, Pico Mountain. Whether exploring an underground lava tube, enjoying the viniculture of this UNESCO World Heritage Site or hiking a mountain, we’ll have a full day of adventure on this unique island.

    Walk Through Azorean Wine Country

Experience the island’s wine country at Vinhas da Criação Velha, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We’ll discover the island’s wine tradition, flavors and scents still cultivated in volcanic earth—particularly around the village of Criação Velha.

Explore the Volcanic Caves of Gruta das Torres

Venture through Pico Island’s underground world at Gruta das Torres, the longest lava cave in the Azores.

    Option to Climb Pico Mountain

For those interested in a challenge, climb Pico Mountain, the highest point in Portugal. Hike through ancient lava flow and up steep trails toward the dormant volcano crater, ascending to the summit for mind-blowing views of Faial Island from the top of Pico Mountain.

    Days 7-9

    Furnas, Sao Miguel

    Jeep Safari to Fire Lake

Explore the island in a fun-filled jeep safari to Lagoa do Fogo, “Fire Lake,” a pristine, blue crater lake that’s one of the most beautiful in the Azores. We’ll also pass through streams and see a stunning waterfall, “Salto do Cabrito.”

Outdoor Thermal Pool at Terra Nostra Hotel

The Terra Nostra Hotel has an outdoor botanical garden and a naturally heated outdoor thermal pool that we’ll be able to take full advantage of while exploring Furnas. There isn’t a much better way to relax after a day of adventure!

    Hiking in Faial Da Terra

Visit the area’s natural wonders with a hike to the abandoned village of Sanguinho, that’s now undergoing restoration. Finish the hike back in town with refreshments and mingling with locals.

    Cozido das Furnas Cooking Experience

We’ll discover the “Caldeiras da Lagoa” (Lake Calderas) and learn how to cook like a local by using the area’s hot soil. Learn the process firsthand at the Cozido das Furnas restaurant, preparing the evening’s meal to cook for six hours in the sweltering earth.

    Day 9

    Visit a Tea Plantation

Before heading to the international airport for our flight home, we’ll visit a tea plantation where we’ll taste several different kinds of tea and learn about tea production at Europe’s only tea plantation.
