    Slavery was abolished in 1888, but before that day could come, escaped slaves created thousands of hidden societies and this particular settlement is still inhabited by direct descendants of the original settlers, or quilombola.

    Day 1

    Fly to Brazil


    Days 2-3

    Iguassu Falls

    Brazilian Side of the Falls

    Take a guided walk around the Brazilian side of the falls, which offers the widest, most panoramic views of the expansive, intricate, and gorgeous waterfalls.

    Argentinian Side of the Falls

    We’ll have a full day today to explore the Argentinian side of UNESCO World Heritage Site Iguassu Falls, through an aerial, interactive experience.


    Days 4-6

    Paraty

    Guided Tour of Historic District

    Walk around the historic city center of Paraty, a Portuguese colonial city dating back to the 18th century and served as a port during Brazil’s Gold Rush.

    Ceramics Workshop

    Meet a local artist and spend some time learning about his craft. The art of ceramics is beautiful and mesmerizing; there’s a good chance we’ll all being it home as a new hobby!

    Quilombola Community

    Learn about the country’s difficult history of slavery on our visit to a quilombo, a settlement created by escaped slaves that still flourish today. Many of the people living in these communities are descendants of the original quilombola.

    Boating in the Bay

    Enjoy a fun day on the water as we take a boat out for a day of adventure. We will stop for lunch at an island restaurant. Enjoy swimming, snorkeling, or just relaxing when we anchor in Paraty’s beautiful bay.


    Days 7-9

    Rio

    Cooking with Chef Simone

    Visiting the teaching kitchen of Chef Simone, a vibrant, energetic Brazilian woman who’ll help us make some scrumptious local dishes is a treat that everyone’s tastebuds always remember!

    Hike Sugarloaf Mountain

    We’ll hike up Sugarloaf Mountain for spectacular views of Botafogo Cove, Guanabara Bay, and the Copacabana seafront. We’ll head back down the mountain in a more relaxed fashion, catching a ride in a glass-walled cable car.

    Churrascaria Dinner

    We’ll dine at a Churrascaria, where meat is cooked “churrasco” style, the Brazilian version of a BBQ. There’s no need to get up for seconds; the food will be brought right to our table for us to eat as much as we’d like!

    Corcovado Mountain (Christ the Redeemer)

    Take a train ride to the the top of Corcovado Mountain and get face-to-face with Christ the Redeemer, an iconic symbol of Brazil that’s a stunning site to behold.

    Capoeira Class

    Learn the art of Capoeira, a Brazilian martial art combining elements of dance, acrobatics, and music that remains an important part of the country’s cultural heritage.

    Guests at Hotel das Cataratas benefit from a supreme location, directly across from the majestic Iguassu Falls. The hotel is built in traditional Portuguese colonial style, with dark wood furnishings and bright Brazilian accents, like paintings of local tropical flora and fauna. All rooms have free internet access and widescreen LCD TV. On the property is an outdoor pool and tennis courts as well as a full service spa.

    Pousada Literaria de Paraty

    All 23 rooms at the Pousada offer king beds, LCD TV, DVD, air conditioning, safe and Wi-Fi. The restaurant Quintal das Letras has a menu reflecting Paraty cuisine. Pool, spa, and a large library of books and DVDs complete the comforts offered here.
