  • Itinerary

    Day 1

    Fly to Tanzania

    Days 2-3

    Arusha

    Visit to Arusha National Park

Spend the day in Arusha National Park, a small but outstanding park that includes ancient volcanoes, wildlife-rich craters, grasslands, lush forest, and alkaline lakes.

    Arusha National Park Waterfall Walk

Head into the foothills of Mount Meru with a park ranger and your guide, and follow a gentle uphill trail to the Tulutuluisia Waterfall. From this vantage point, you have beautiful views of the park’s diverse landscapes.

    Days 4-5

    Tarangire National Park

    Visit to Tarangire National Park

Make a visit to the baobab-covered Tarangire National Park, which has a diversity of wildlife and its own distinct charm. Besides its own migration of wildebeest, zebra, elephant, gazelle, and antelope, Tarangire attracts over 550 species of birds and some rarer mammals, such as the fringe-eared oryx and the African wild dog.

    Traditional Games for Kids

Kids can learn some traditional games from Tanzanians, such “Rede” (a little like dodgeball) or “Bao” (a boardgame requiring chess-like strategy) among many others.

    Footprint Identifying

How do you tell the difference between the footprint of a dik-dik and a Thomson’s gazelle? How about a leopard and a lion? A guide will take you on a walk and show you the tricks to identifying signs of wildlife.

    Enjoy Your Nyumba

With millions of stars overhead and a gentle evening breeze, sit by the fire and enjoy the pristine surroundings.

    Days 6-7

    Ngorongoro Highlands

Visit to the Floor of Ngorongoro Crater

Visit the Ngorongoro Crater, where you are likely to find an abundance of wildlife. With luck, you might even see rhinoceros and big cats, such as lion and cheetah. The diversity of species often inspires awe, from baboons and elephants in the Lerai Forest to wildebeest and mountain reedbuck over the crater’s grassy floor.

    Gibb's Farm Tour

Take a guided tour of Gibb’s garden, a sloping 10 acres of vegetables and fruit gardens, growing everything from artichoke to zucchini and providing most of the ingredients for the delicious organic meals enjoyed by guests. Learn about other sustainable practices at Gibb’s as your tour passes through a pig and dairy farm where you can even try your hands at milking a cow. You can also walk through the famed coffee bean fields that gave the farm its start over 80 years ago.

    Gibb's Farm Optional Afternoon Activities

You may choose to spend the afternoon relaxing on the verandah with tea, or taking advantage of innumerable optional activities: a farm or garden tour, bird watching, coffee roasting, and more.

    Days 8-9

    Serengeti National Park

Wildlife Viewing En Route to Your Nyumba

Enjoy the journey to your next Nyumba camp, as there will be plenty to see along the way. Perhaps you will come across a chase between predator and prey; maybe you will spot a wake of vultures; or maybe you will be lucky enough to find a leopard relaxing high in the limbs of an acacia tree.

    Visit Olduvai Gorge

Make a short stop at Olduvai Gorge, a deep ravine and site of fossilized remains of animals and hominids that date as far back as two million years. A brief lecture and small museum tour are included.

    Optional Serengeti Balloon Excursion

A pre-dawn wake-up call leaves you time to drive to the balloon launch site in order to catch the most dramatic light. Then take to the skies just as the sun rises. Glide over the plains and acacia treetops, taking in spectacular views of the Seronera River Valley and the surrounding plains. After your descent, enjoy a magnificent champagne breakfast right in the midst of the Serengeti wilderness.

Full Day of Wildlife Viewing in the Serengeti

Spend the whole day wildlife viewing. Your guide will point out hidden animals, like leopard hiding in a tree or lion concealed by tall grass.

    Traditional Games

In your down time, ask your guide how to play the traditional game of Bao.

    Explore Camp with Your Guide

For those who opt not to take the balloon excursion, there is much to discover within arm’s reach of camp; learn how to identify animal footprints and bird calls with your guide.

    Days 10-11

    Eastern Serengeti Ecosystem

Morning Hike in the Eastern Serengeti Ecosystem

Head out on a light hike this morning. The terrain will be fairly mild, but make sure that you’ve got comfortable shoes with good traction. Being out on the plains on foot at this time of day is magical.

Wildlife Viewing as You Depart the Serengeti

As you follow the meandering path out of Serengeti National Park, take in the gorgeous scenery and wildlife viewing before moving on to the next part of your adventure.

    Maasai Boma Visit

Immerse yourself in the semi-nomadic culture of the Maasai by visiting a boma, which is a settlement of circular mud-and-dung Maasai homes. Many Maasai still roam the plains of northern Tanzania with their herds of cattle, maintaining their traditions while adapting to new ways of life.

    Maasai Storyteller

Gather around the campfire to listen to a Maasai elder tell folktales, which are translated into English. The story is not planned in advance, and you will hear it exactly as it is traditionally told.

    Day 12

    Leave Via Arusha

    Stop at Cultural Heritage Center

Visit and shop at the Cultural Heritage Center.

Farewell Lunch at Arusha Coffee Lodge

During a special farewell lunch in Arusha, you will have time to say goodbye to your safari companions as you prepare for your departure. Visit the adjoining Shanga workshop where physically challenged artisans create remarkable jewelry, learn glass-blowing, and sell their work.
