Adventure awaits in Yellowstone National Park and Big Sky, where the geysers, canyons and pine forests evoke a grand dream of the West.

Head out on adventure with us to the sprawling sagebrush flats, coniferous forests and meadowlands of Yellowstone National Park and Big Sky. This active family trip offers the time-tested best of Yellowstone’s outdoor adventuring: witness Old Faithful erupt, explore the otherworldly landscapes of the Upper Geyser Basin and hike the winding trails of Yellowstone’s backcountry. Your expert naturalist guide will lead the way as you float the Gallatin River valley, trek the outer rim of the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone and ride horseback through fields, forests and pristine plains. The days are filled with whitewater rafting, wagon rides and riverside picnics, while the nights land you under the stars for cowboy cookouts and a “yee-haw-worthy” feeling of wonder.

Thomson Family Adventures will set you up with your lodging, hardy meals, expert guides and included services. Summer in Yellowstone showcases the best of the West, and it’s all for you. Let’s saddle up!

Explore the Stellar Beauty of Yellowstone

Hike winding rivers and the rim of Yellowstone’s colossal canyons. Search for fossils in pine-studded forests. In the Upper Geyser Basin, discover hydrothermal waters ranging in color from lunar white to pink and sandy red. Go whitewater rafting in the scenic canyon of the Gallatin River. Talk about outdoor adventure!

Witness the Eruptions of Old Faithful

Old Faithful’s magnificent eruptions shoot up water and vapor, thanks to a process where magma heats up and pressurizes underground water. This is a must-see phenomenon, and the rest of the Upper Basin deserves some love too – it’s home to many of the world’s largest geysers.

    Horseback Ride the Yellowstone Landscape

Mosey out with your expert naturalist guide for a relaxed, easy trot in Yellowstone’s backcountry. Later, hop in a horse-drawn wagon for a ride to a cowboy cookout under the stars. No experience fulfills the feeling of the West quite like this.

    Discover Amazing Wildlife

The wildlife is one of the most incredible parts of Yellowstone: elk, bison, bald eagles, grizzly bears, wolves and many more amazing animals call this slice of the world home. Your naturalist guide will help you identify signs of wildlife, such as otter slides and deer tracks.

    Learn Outdoor Safety Skills

As your expert guide leads you through rolling plains and winding rivers, they will help you develop your outdoor safety skills. Learn how to identify signs of wildlife, forage for berries, start fires and stay safe in the outdoors. And when you retrace the footsteps of Sacagawea, Lewis and Clark, you’ll learn how to read patterns in the rivers and weather, like a real explorer!

  • Itinerary

    Day 1

    Fly to Bozeman, Montana

    Days 1-5

    Big Sky

    Visit Old Faithful

One of the world’s most magnificent geysers, Old Faithful’s eruptions are enormous, ranging in height from 100-180 feet, and they can last between one and a half to five minutes long. This stunning display of magma-heated water is one of the most beautiful natural occurrences in North America.

    Hike Yellowstone's Rivers

Explore the river bottoms and backcountry waterfalls of Yellowstone’s less-traveled wilderness. During this hike, you’ll stop by hot springs, mud pots and other thermal features to uncover the science behind their occurrence with hands-on learning opportunities. In some areas, you can also take your shoes off and get your feet wet, if you’d like!

    Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center

Spend some time at the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center, a non-profit sanctuary for animals that can no longer live in the wild. You’ll see grizzly bears, wolves, otters, birds of prey and more living in their natural environments. You’ll also learn about how these species fit into the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, and what you can do to protect these species out in the wild.

    Hike Babbling Streams

Venture out on a moderate hike in the scenic Yellowstone wilderness, tracing the curves of rivers and rugged paths through rolling plains. You’ll search for fossils and learn wilderness safety skills along the way, such as how to start a fire, forage for berries, stay safe in bear country, and look for wildlife tracks.

Ride Horseback on the Trails of Yellowstone Country

Time to saddle up! No other activity fulfills the dream of the West like a horseback ride. Slow down and smell the sagebrush with your expert naturalist guide as you mosey out for a relaxed, easy trot on the Yellowstone trails.

    Whitewater Rafting the Gallatin River

Head out on the Class II-III rapids of the Gallatin River, providing fun splashes and relaxed floats down mellow streams. This activity is designed for family adventurers, and runs through a scenic, rocky canyon.

Hike the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone

Spend the day hiking the rim of the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, a stunning display of the park’s complex geology that has been sculpted over eons by water, wind, and earthquakes. The vistas of Hayden Valley open far below and beyond. Keep an eye out for Yellowstone’s iconic wildlife, including bison, bears, wolves, elk, waterfowl, herons, eagles and more.

    Day 6

    Bozeman

Retrace the Footsteps of Native American Explorers

Explore the Montana Territory by retracing the steps of the Bannock, Crow, Shoshone Native Americans and more. You’ll learn about these native peoples as you swim, play, kayak and float the same Class I-II stretches of the Missouri River that Lewis, Clark and Sacagawea floated. You’ll also learn how to read patters in the rivers and weather, like a real explorer!

    Day 7

    Depart Bozeman, Montana

Transfer to the Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport

You’ll be transferred to the Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport for your flight home.
