One of our favorite new destinations for a family vacation is to Colombia! But over the past few decades, there have been a lot of misconceptions that have developed around Colombia, its culture, and its people. Colombia recently ranked as the second happiest country in the world according to the World Happiness Index. Colombia is not the same place it was even a decade ago! It’s a place that is safe, fun, friendly, and perfect for a family vacation with kids. Check out some of these common misconceptions about Colombia before you plan your next family vacation!

Colombia is Always Hot

Many people think that because Colombia is in South America it’s always hot. In fact, there are many microclimates and the temperatures in Colombia are dependent on the altitude! While it’s true that Colombia does not have a winter season, it does have a rainy season.

Colombia Has No Internet

We have gotten many people that ask if there’s internet in Colombia. The answer is yes! It’s available but it can be spotty and slower than what we’re accustomed to in the U.S.

Colombia is Not Diverse

Much like the U.S. there are Colombians of all kinds. They’re a mixed people with roots that trace back to African peoples, Native Americans, and Spanish peoples. Throughout history these populations traveled to the country at one point or another and as a result have shaped the unique and diverse culture that makes Colombia so special today.

Colombian Food is Spicy

Not really! There can be some spicy aspects to a dish when herbs and spices are added, but generally speaking, Colombian food is not spicy.

Colombia is Not Safe

This could not be further from the truth! It has become a popular place for many ex-pats and internationals to live and work. There are many stores, travel companies, and family businesses that are run by non-Colombians.  Many people who travel to Colombia return home to find that Colombians are warm, enthusiastic, and hard-working people who enjoy spending time with their families and taking it slow. They also love to meet visitors and show them how great their home country is!

Colombia is Spelt Columbia

It is not. Columbia is a school in New York City and an outdoor adventure clothing company. Colombia on the other hand, is an amazing country that every family should explore!

Colombia is Not Family Friendly

It’s perfect for families because Colombians are a very family oriented people. Family comes first, meals are eaten at the kitchen table together and family members talk regularly. Colombia is a world of wonders full of new discoveries like national parks, ancient ruins, beaches, wildlife, plants, and food. Everyone here bonds over food!
