The 4 Best Family Adventures to Take in November

Learning to surf in Costa Rica

Swimming with whale sharks in Baja

Relaxing on the beach in Phuket

Meeting locals in Tanzania

November is one of the most underrated months of the year to travel. We aren’t sure why because it’s one of our favorites! For starters, November often falls into shoulder season. Shoulder season is a less popular season for travel in a given destination.

With this comes two things that every traveling family loves to hear: lower prices and fewer crowds. Everything from family vacation packages to hotels and airfare cost less. There are also amazing reasons, outside of price and crowds, to visit to certain destinations in November. Here are four places that are perfect for travel with kids in November.

1. Costa Rica

November marks the end of the rainy season in Costa Rica and the start of the green season. As the rain breaks the jungles will be greener, the waterfalls and rivers will flow more freely, and the wildlife will be more curious. November is also the month that green turtles lay their eggs. If you’re lucky you can see the baby turtles hatch and make their way to the ocean for the first time!

2. Baja

Baja is amazing for families all year round for a whole host of reasons, yet November is an extra special time for a visit. It is the only time throughout the year that you can swim with whale sharks. Yes, whale sharks. Imagine the excitement your children will feel swimming next to these giant, gentle creatures! You’ll also get a great photo out of it!

3. Thailand

Just as in Costa Rica, November is the official end to the rainy season in Thailand. If you go south to the islands this gives you more time to relax on the beach or swim in the clear emerald turquoise waters. Loy Krathong, Thailand’s most enchanting celebration, is also in November. If you are in Thailand for Loy Krathong you will be able to participate in the festival. You’ll send a floating lantern out to sea or into the sky to symbolize a fresh start to the year.

4. Tanzania

The “short rains” arrive in the Southern Serengeti around this time of year. Rain rejuvenates feeding and water sources that attract wildebeest, and in Tanzania, where there are wildebeest there are also lions, cheetahs, and leopards. This down season is a great time to enjoy uninterrupted wildlife viewing.
